To consider classroom development of children’s meta-cognitive strategies

Aim

To consider the extent to which classroom development of children's meta-cognitive strategies could be enhanced.

Evidence and reflection

Focus on a classroom in which you have some teaching responsibility. Review and self-consciously monitor your own practices. Perhaps you could also ask a colleague to observe you teach a session.

Consider the three simple conclusions suggested by Nisbet and Shucksmith (1986).

To what extent do you:

  • Set clear cognitive goals?
  • Model strategies for learning?
  • Encourage metacognitive discussion?

How could you further develop the support you offer children in enhancing their meta-cognitive strategies?

Follow up

Review the children's learning. Has your work on meta-cognition had any impact?
