Aim
To compare and contrast the writing and reading expectations in the lessons of two different teachers.
Evidence and reflection
Join up with another teacher in your school and agree to observe one of each other’s lessons with a particular focus on reading and writing. Make a note of all the reading material made available to the students during that lesson: writing that is part of the physical space in which the lesson takes place; writing prepared by the teacher before the lesson (e.g. PowerPoint slides or worksheets); published material e.g. textbooks or novels, noting with the latter whether photocopied sections or whole texts are used; writing done by the students, including the nature of the task, time allocated, what students are taught about how to accomplish it. Afterwards, discuss the commonalities and distinctions between reading and writing in your two lessons.
